From the Dope Sheet

From this weeks Dope Sheet:

  • Aaron Kampman had his 4th career 3 sack game.
  • The Chiefs are 6-1-1 against the Packers the best record by any opponent.
  • This is the 1st Packer trip to KC since 1996
  • Favre is 0-3 against the Chiefs, the only team he as not beat. The losses came in 2003, 1996 and 1993
  • Favre has 5 TD's against the Chiefs. Receivers have been: Jackie Harris, Don Bebee (pictured above), Derrick Mayes, Bubba Franks and Amahan Green.
  • Under McCarthy team is 8-3 on the road.
  • After Monday's game winner Favre has 13 TD passes of 75 yards or more best in league history. His pair of + 75 yard 7 pointers was just the 4th such feat since 1990.
  • Green Bay has won 6 of the last 8 against teams coming off bye weeks.
  • Who would think? The Chiefs rank higher passing (17th) than they do running (28th).

19-13 Win

Off the Favre to Jennings game winning hookup the Packers get their 1st overtime road win since 1983 and the 1st George Bush's vice presidency.

  1. The Packers have never been a good tackling team to my eye. This showed up on the Broncos last drive as numerous Packers missed tackles and let the Broncos get within an accuate Jay Cutler pass of winning.
  2. A.J. Hawk. I'm not saying he's a bust or bench him. I am saying that he is a disapointment and isn't seen doing much. Barnett 6 tackles, 3 for Hawk
  3. For a nite there was a running game and it's name was Ryan Grant. Packers ran 27 times and passed 28. Wynn once again was hurt. For that's it with him. Let's activate Brandon Jackson and let Wynn be on the bench right from the start- he's going to end up there anyway. FYI after the game Grant was named the starter for the KC game.
  4. Red zone offensive penalties are becoming common, especially from the offensive line. Holding, false starts etc. Tony Moll and Chad Clifton gained false starts on the 1st drive that ended up as a FG. Packers should have been up at least 17-7 at half. Jason Spitz gets demerits for all his penalties. For the game they were 0-2 in the red zone and 0-2 goal to go. More success there would have been nice!
  5. As does Atari Bigby for his nite of multitudonous penalties. I think he's the best tacklet they've had in sometime, but last nite didn't cut it. He had a late hit flag and a pass interference on Denver's TD drive. 1/4 (6 of 24) of the Broncos 1st downs came because of penalties. Total penalties 13 for 103 yards!
  6. The 2 TD's came from James Jones and Greg Jennings. I think the offense is becoming there's and not Drivers. Jennings and Jones combined for 9 balls, the rest of the team had 12.
  7. Going into the game I thought Cutler would be good for a pick or two. Instead it was a fumbled center exchange that took at least 3 and probably 7 points off the board.
  8. Loved the announcers talking about how Favre in pre game threw from the 50 yard line to an end zone pylon to prove his arm strength. More on that later (in the game) so to speak.
  9. During the game the announcers said Bailey and Blye were the best pair of cover corners in the league. Then Jones beat Bailey, and Jennings got by Blye for the game winner. I think I'll take Harris and Woodson who looked great in those high white socks. Yes penalties occur but they don't give up much although Harris had some problems on the last drive.
  10. Why does Coach McCarthy stick a Sharpie under the strap at the back of his cap? Not enough pockets. Eccentric? Does it matter?

Weighing Reading

Read an article where a high school football coach was 'appalled' that the school he was going to coach at didn't have a mandatory year round weight training program.

Would that we would hear an English teacher express concern that a school doesn't have a mandatory year round reading program!

Reason and Fear

The lead from Paul Krugman's column: "In America’s darkest hour, Franklin Delano Roosevelt urged the nation not to succumb to “nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror.” But that was then.
Today, many of the men who hope to be the next president — including all of the candidates with a significant chance of receiving the Republican nomination — have made unreasoning, unjustified terror the centerpiece of their campaigns."

I've thought that since 9/11 it's going to be a battle between fear and reason. Bush has not been brave but fearful. Will our next prez get our of the fear loop?

Parcells on QB's

ESPN gave Bill Parcells a segment to divulge the contents of the magical scroll, and he presented his quarterback commandments.

1. Press or t.v., agents or advisors, family or wives, friends or relatives, fans or hangers on, ignore them on matters of football, they don’t know what’s happening here.

2. Don’t forget to have fun, but don’t be the class clown. Clowns and leaders don’t mix. Clowns can’t run a huddle.

3. A quarterback throws with his legs more than his arms. Squat and run. Fat quarterbacks can’t avoid the rush.

4. Know your job cold. This is not a game without errors. Keep yours to a minimum. Study.

5. Know your own players. Who’s fast? Who can catch? Who needs encouragement? Be precise. Know your opponent.

6. Be the same guy everyday. In condition, preparing to lead, studying your plan. A coach can’t prepare you for every eventuality. Prepare yourself and remember, impulse decisions usually equal mistakes.

7. Throwing the ball away is a good play. Sacks, interceptions, and fumbles are bad plays..Protect against those.

8. You must learn to manage the game. Personnel, play call, motions, ball handling, proper reads, accurate throws, play fakes. Clock, clock, clock, don’t you ever lose track of the clock.

9. Passing stats and td passes are not how you’re gonna be judged. Your job is to get your team in the endzone and that’s how you’re gonna be judged.

10. When all around you is in chaos, you must be the hand that steers the ship. If you have a panic button, so will everyone else. Our ship can’t have panic buttons.

11. Don’t be a celebrity quarterback. We don’t need any of those. We need battlefield commanders that are willing to fight it out everyday, every week, and every season, and lead their team to win after win after

Withdrawal in Disgust Not the Same as Apathy- The Into the Wilds

Into the Wild the movie had a big affect on me over 10 years after Into the Wild the book had a similar affect on me. The movie is a thought generator and the day after I'm still not sure I have it all down.

I'm also rereading the book so that is adding to the swirl of thoughts and questions. This is Sean Penn's interpretation of the book and I need to determine what I feel about this. Prior to the book was the Outside Magazine article.

Swirls are one thing I remember of the movie. The cinematography is swirling, looking over landscape, vertigo inducing and wonderful.

The movie is faithful to the book. Nothing in the movie is wholly made up. Some things are combined but I can't complain.

I think one big message for me comes on Page 57 of the book when Krakauer quotes a letter McCandless wrote to Ron Franz. He wrote: "The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. They joy of life comes from our encounter with new experiences."

On screen Penn makes this: "The core of man’s spirit comes with new experiences."

This experience hunger is echoed by round the world sailor Paul Cayard "Remember, the richest people on the planet are the ones with the best experiences!"

In large part this is what explains things to me. It's the message, the 'nut graf' of the movie/book. He was experience hungry without expectations or need for conventional success.

This hunger for new experiences takes Chris to Alaska.

What was heaviest in his pack? Books of which he took 9 or 10. One was Tolstoy's 'Family Happiness' From this McCandless underlined a part that quoted Tolstoy on happiness. It rad in part, "then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbor -- such is my idea of happiness." During his Alaska trip McCandless had much of this.

While in Alaska McCandless made a note in a book reading, "Happiness only real when shared." Was his solitary experience teaching him this lesson?

One thing McCandless did not bring was a map an item that is on pretty much any list of essential equipment. Strange, no? Maybe not if you've read Arthur Ransome's Secret Water a book where children are marooned sans map. Exploring the unknown has always run deep.

Did McCandless go too boldly and without enough food and gear? Yes, 10 pounds of rice was not enough. Of course he'd done his Mexican trip eating mainly rice so one his treasured experiences had given him some basis for this decision.

Being young, bold, and overconfident is not a new phenomenon. Many have take similar sketchy trips and survived. Young people- especially men continue to drive too fast and crash their cars. Many times such endeavours end up as school of hard knocks, we'll laugh about this one day memories.

McCandless' death is attributed by Krakauer to eating wild potato seeds which were not known to be poisonous. Event after this Chris might have been OK if he was strong enough and had enough of a nutritional base to flush the poison.

Eddie Vedder's songs that accompany the movie are spot on appropriately. In one he sings "goona rise up, find my direction magnetically..." I think that's what McCandless did, he found his direction, and sent it seeking all he could. His Alaskan end perhaps was a tragedy but only because he had the courage to seek it because he did withdraw in disgust and did not accept apathy

co2 levels up

The growth rate for carbon dioxide, or CO2, emissions has averaged 3.3 percent a year since 2000, compared with 1.1 percent in the 1990s.....The rate rose 35 percent more than economic growth had led scientists to anticipate.

Causes? One is that we are not as efficient at using CO2 as we had anticipated (using more coal for example), and the second cause is that it appears that the CO2 sinks are weakening. The effect of the weakening sinks alone could add 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) to the global average temperature by 2100. we cannot really pinpoint where the sinks are weakening, except for in the Southern Ocean,''

Wording

In his Sunday column NY Times column Thomas Freidman used the following phrase: "energy-climate challenge." I immediately liked this as compared to global warming.

One it doesn't have the baggage of global warming- it's fresh. Two it gets down to specifics. Energy and the carbon it produces thru coal burning and gas guzzling is what is changing the climate. The challenge is to come up with alternatives to reverse this.

For me it also brings up the question of if energy produced carbon is warming our planet and changing the climate how do we see it besides the average temperatures? For instance Muskegon is 9 degrees above normal in October. How is this seen in weather patterns?

Does anyone know?

According to the National Weather Service Muskegon's warm October is not due to climate change as "A much stronger Polar Jet driving farther south for this time of year, which in turn pulls warmer air farther north in the eastern US."

A 'Prime' Time Game

In the 1st half of the Colts/Jags Monday niter Indy scored 3 times. Each drive took 11 plays. They scored 17 points.

Turtle Fence distraction

The 'turtle fence' has become a bit of a local story backed by our Congressman. A fence is being constructed to prevent turtles crossing US 31 being killed and to take away the risk of drivers swerving to miss the turtles. Federal funds (318,000 dollars) are being used.

Congressman Hoekstra is not happy. Amongst other things he said, "“Serious times require a serious approach to the very real problems Michigan faces.”

Hoekstra also gets off this comment, "
"And they're saying, 'I'm paying this massive new tax increase so that we can spend it to build a turtle fence?" Hey federal congressman isn't that a comment on a state issue? Gee, you're not running for governor are you?

Meanwhile there is a $ 196 billion funding request pending....for the Iraq War. This is after Bush vetoed $ 35 billion in children's health care.

And what did Congressman Hoekstra say ab0ut this request? Simple answer: nothing!

He's not distracting from the war funding issue is he? No, never that would be cynical of me!

Let me note that approximately 616,352 turtle fences could be built for the cost of the war.

So if these are serious times, Congressman, how about a comment on the war funds?

Running Game

Coach on the running game: "running the ball is about attitude, approach and fundamentals. What I am referring to schematically is more run-at runs. In our play book, that's runs you run against any defense, get a hat on a hat even if you don't have the best angle. We need to get back to getting down hill and stop trying to be so perfect."

That's what I am saying- if you want to run the ball well- you first have to run the ball!

Packers beat Redskins

Here's one description of this game: "17-14 victory over the bumbling Washington Redskins that, by most performance barometers, should have been a defeat."

Favre's take: "But to be 5-1 and kind of — I think we need to look into the negatives more than the positives, because once again, we are finding ways to win, but how can we get better? You know, because it's only going to get tougher from here on out."

Coaches comment: "
We feel good about being 5-1 but we're a team that needs to clean our house. I feel like I stood here last week and said the same things. I still feel that. I feel like we're a football team that's just getting started. We have a number of areas that we need to continue to improve on."

My notes:

  • The defense, especially the line, got dominant with pressure late.
  • It was an ugly game, not so much given away, as not taken.
  • The Packers running game sucks. But could they try running a little more? Coach says, "I felt that we were sticking to the passing game and the running game is a work in progress."
  • They did throw deep but to no effect. Per Peter King Favre said "It's been a long time since I got beat up like that in a game,'' said Favre Sunday. He emerged from the game against the 'Skins with a bum ankle and knee.
  • Donald Driver got back in the offense. James Jones, despite the called back TD, was not very effective.
  • The pair of holding penalties cost a TD.
  • The Franks catch definetly could have been a TD, ruled a force out rather than no catch due to out of bounds.
  • Crosby the kicker had a putrid day 1 of 3.
  • Still with a little luck could have been 31-14. Per Peter King "Referee Terry McAulay's crew at Green Bay-Washington, for an overall poor job and costing the Packers two legitimate touchdowns. First, there was a pathetic holding call on right tackle Mark Tauscher, negating one Favre touchdown pass; there was nothing close to a hold on the play. Last year, the officials were told not to call offensive holding unless it was something an official actually saw. Well, there's no way an official saw holding on Tauscher. Never happened. Then, a second Packers TD throw was negated when Bubba Franks cleanly caught a pass in the corner of the end zone with one foot down before getting driven out of the end zone by Washington cornerback Fred Smoot. Incomplete. Insane."

There is no courtesy or understanding, there is just the presumption of guilt every step of the process.

The unsympathetic officers surrounding her- not the best way to treat someone in crisis so how far gone into irrational fear we have gone!

Tough Day

It's a tough day to be a true fan of the Packers. There is emotional investment and you tend towards the down side after a gift rapped victory to the Bears. Fumbles, interceptions, conservative play calling from coach 'Joseph Mccarthy'.....let's beat the Redskins!

From Peter King's column: "Now you know why coach Mike McCarthy and offensive coordinator Joe Philbin have been preaching about turnovers since the first Green Bay minicamp. Talk about throwing a game away."

"We see how slim the margin for victory is when the Pack turns it over four times."

"The Lions are frauds."

"I think anyone who ever chuckles about the importance of turnovers needs to watch a tape of the second half of the Sunday night game, when Green Bay turned it over three times, and also needs to know that the Packers were 31st in the NFL in turnovers, with 139, in the four years before 2007. There is such a direct correlation between winning and not turning it over. The Pack was expert at winning the turnover battle in its 4-0 start, and horrible in losing a game it had no business losing to the Bears on Sunday night."

"Green Bay's offense was beyond futile in the second half, as conservative a unit as I've seen all year."

Counters Mccarthy, "The Bears came out and played us every single snap the second half in two-deep. We had excellent opportunities to run the football. I'm disappointed in our run game, frankly, in the second half - especially the way we ran the ball in the first half."

I guess I am recovering already. It seems like the silver lining is- more or less- turnovers lost the game. That is more fixable then a general ass kicking!

If the Packers win at home against the Redskins they would go into the bye week 5-1......if.... etc.

Kitrick Taylor

Kitrick Taylor that's the name of the catcher of Favre's 2nd TD against the Bengals at Lambeau in 1992. That was the Washington Stater's only career TD. It was a game winning 35 yarder with Sterling Sharpe having caught a 5 yarder earlier.

Taylor still has the ball and has a successful post football career.

Others to have caught 35 yarders include Jackie Harris, Antonio Freeman, and Ahman Green. The most recent having been Green's in 2001 at the Pontiac Silverdome.

Book Comment: Timbuktu

This is an emotionally tough dog and man buddy/road. Maybe because I'm a dog and not a kid person it struck me as so much better than The Road.

The ending is honest and metaphysically open to being a happy one.
