Have a Good Read: War as They Knew It

An extremely laudable book about the Hayes/Schembechler era of the UM/OSU rivalry. Hayes was a much deeper and caring man than the perception, while Schembechler was more of a straight football man.

And then they kicked a field goal....

Packers around the 2 or maybe the 1. 4th and goal. Tie game. And McCarthy decides to kick a field goal!

Maybe if you had a good defense or a defense that was having a good game or a defense that had not folded late in games before. Not if you had this days Packers defense though.

Score a TD and you go up by 7. Only way to lose is with a TD and 2 point.

And he's paid millions...and can't make a decision clearly scene by millions of others.

Aaron Rogers is a nice guy and today a pretty good player. However, he does not yet have the guts or moxie to make plays in winning time...nice pick dude!
-----
(How seriously did you think about going for the touchdown there at the one?)
McCarthy: "I thought about it. It was an option. But to go up three points with two minutes left at home, I was confident in that position. So that's why I kicked it."

How can you be confident? Just no reason for that statement!

(If you did it again, would you do it differently?)
I don't think like that. You make decisions and you live with them.

Hopefully you will look at the decision future-wise....will you do it different in a future game?

Textable Game Review: Panthers Loss

Carried a feeling of doom throughout the game. Poor decision to kick last FG as no reason for confidence in defense. At least Rogers had some good passes.

Have a Good Read: Roads to Quoz

A good travel book. Bit slow developing at times but there is still time to cover: rail cycles, the Maine Woods, Arkansas, how to select a good cafe and more.

Vendee Globe winners will be...

11/29/08 9 boats are within 20 miles of each other based on distance to finish. What is key at this point is being the first to get around the St. Helena high and into the westerlies of the South.

7 of the top 9 have previous Vendee Globe experience including Seb Josse in 3rd, and defedning champ Riou in 6th.

Current rankings show Generali and Brit Air 1st and 2nd. These boats are sailed by first time participants Yann Elies and Armel Le Cleac'h.

Elies is at 35 degrees south while Josse is at 36 south but farther west. Being east puts Elies closer to the theortical finish, but Josse's position maybe be more favorable short term.
11/15/08 Entering the first weekend of the race Loick Peyron and Gitana lead by 14 miles over Le Cam and 23 by Josse. Golding is 77 miles back. Peyron had reached 24 degrees north off Mauritania.

11/12/08 Update: Desjoyeux had electrical issues and had to return to port, mend and restart. Josse is the current leader with Peyron 3rd, Riou 5th, Guillmont 9th, Beyou 10th and Golding 11th. In writing the original article I accidentally did not include J.P. Dick who has been strong early currently setting 2nd.

Quotes: Josse "The weather condition are pleasant, a big change since the storm, the sun is back and it's warmer! It seems that my small east option works quite well. It's this kind of small gain and small decisions that can make a huge difference at the end."

Golding "strategically it is not about where you are on the course, it is about when you are going to go west. You are looking at places down the track – passing Madeira and setting up for the Canaries.”

The Vendee Globe is a round the world sailboat race contested by solo sailors that starts and finishes in France. This will be the 6th edition. 30 sailors are entered.

I give 7 sailors a chance at victory. My possible winners list is as follows: Jeremy Beyou, Michel Desjoyeux, Mike Golding,Mark Gillmont, Sebasitan Josse, Luke Peyron, Vincent Riou.

Beyou is an accomplished sailor in the Figaro class. He has a solid design but the boat has not been 100% reliable and he has not been around the world. The longest odds on this list.

Desjoyeux won the 2000 edition and is back with a Farr design. He has won all sorts of solo races and a win here is entirely conceivable.

Golding will sail his 3rd Vendee. He was in the top 3 last time, has a new boat and is the toughest sailor in the fleet.

Guillemot has a design that differs from many of the new boats, but lacks round the world experience.

Josse has several round the world trips both solo and crewed. I see him as better than his boat.

Peyron is immensly experienced and has had a quality run up to this race.

Riou is the defending champion but has had problems with reliability.

So my top 3 predictions are: 1. Josse 2. Desjoyeux 3. Golding.

Panthers @ Packers Keys

Let me start by saying that in preface to game keys I will always list the following 3 for each game.

First the team needs to score TD's not FG's. Good teams do this.

Second each game the special teams need to make a play be it a TD return, a key punt, strong coverage work, blocked extra point.

Third turnovers need to be created. This along with special teams can lead to short fields making it easier to get 6 than three.

A long punt return to the 20 giving the offense a short TD drive is one way these can occur. Another might be good kick coverage pinning a team deep, then a force fumble leading to another short TD.

Call that general keys, my philosophy of football etc.
-----

At this point it's all about questions:

On offense

1. Can Clifton block Peppers?

2. Can Rogers make plays not mistakes?

On Defense

1. Can the Panthers two headed run be slowed?

2. Who will rush the QB?

On Special Teams

1. Can Frost punt in the cold?

After crushing the useless Lions the Titans are the AFC's best followed by the Jets.

Giants definitively lead the NFC trailed by Tampa.

From this I see a Giants v. Titans Super Bowl won by the Giants.

Panther trend.....

5th straight road game in which the Panthers have played a team coming off a loss.

According to the Charlotte Observer: "The Panthers' record in those previous four games (the season opener at San Diego isn't included) is 1-3, the only victory a 17-6 triumph at Oakland."

Packer/Panther History

Panthers have been in the league 12 years and have played the Packers 9 times in the regular season and once in the post season.

The Post Season was the NFC title game prior to the Packs victory over the Patriots in the New Orleans Super Bowl.

4 of the r.s. contest have been in Green Bay with the Panthers winning just one in 1999. Last year the Packers won 31-17 in Green Bay on 18 November. Grant had 88 yards, Jennings 7 catches and Lee 2 TD's.

The Panthers 3/6 .33 record is one of their poorest against an NFC team. They are 1-7/.125 against Dallas and 1-4/.200 against Philly.

In 7 of these games the winner has scored at least 30 points, topped by the Packers in 1998. In the Panthers three wins they have scored 33,31 and 32 points. Lowest total by a winner was Green Bay with 17 in 2002, lowest total by loser was Carolina with 7 points in 2001, the only game where either team scored in single digits.

Top 4

The AFC is topped by the undefeated Titans and the won 4 straight Jets. In Tennessee this coming Sunday these teams play each other.

The NFC is topped by the 1 loss Giants and the 2 defeat Panthers. These teams will match up in Week 16 at New York.

I'd project a Giants/Titans Super Bowl with the Giants winning in Tampa Bay.

Packers/Saints History Notes

Packers have played the Saints since 1968. Game was frequently played in Milwaukee (1968,1971,1973,1975,1978,1979,1985). First game in Green Bay was 1989.

This game will be played in the Superdome where the Saints have played since 1975. Green Bay's record here is: 5-4. Green Bay's last Superdome appearance saw Donald Driver catch a TD pass in 2002. Other Packers remaining from that game are Clifton, Kampman and Tauscher.

Overall the Packers are 14-6 v. Saints. This equates to a .700 winning percentage second only to their 8-1/.889 mark against San Diego.

Last 2 games have been played in Green Bay with Packer wins in 2005 52-3 and a 34-27 loss in 2006.

Packers beat Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI at the Superdome.

Legondary Packer Jim Taylor played his final season-the Saints first- with New Orleans in 1967. That year he gained 390 yards and scored 2 TD's.

From 2o00-2004 current GB Head Coach McCarthy was Saints offensive coordinator.

Least dramatic game of the year, also biggest winning margin. Effective running game with defense in control. Hawk effective at MLB. Back to 500 and in NFC North race.

Historic Beating of Bears

Packers 37 to 3 win over Bears is the biggest since Dec. 11, 1994, when Green Bay won-40-3 over Chicago. They also posted a 37-6 win at Chicago in 1996.

Today's game was in Green Bay. 1962 saw a 49-0 win and 1971 a 31-10 victory at Lambeau.

Rogers and the 4thQ

It's been my suspicion that one of the reasons for the Packers lesser success this year is that Aaron Rogers is not playing well in the 4th Quarter. Turns out it is true.

Comparing him to some other QB's from Trent Edwards of Buffalo to Kurt Warner of the Cardinals Rogers is a trailer in 4th quarter performnace. He has 3 final period TD's as comparted to Jay Cutler and Brett Favre's 7. He has 2 INT's + 1 over TD's same as Kurt Warner's 4 TD to 3 INT but considerably inferior to Cutlers 7 to 2 and Trent Edwards 4 to 2.

His 4th quarter rating of 82.3 is the last of the comparison group which is topped by Edwards 103.6. 2nd to last is Brees 86.1.

Rogers loses 11 points off his rating, while QB's like Cutler, and Eli Manning gain up to 10 points.

Full chart below. Learn to be successful in winning time or else!

QB 4Q TD 4QINT Rating 4Q Rating

Rogers 3 2 82.3 93.3
Cutler 7 2 99.6 89.5

Edwards 4 2 103.6 86.9

Packers/Bears History Notes

Just like Mike McCarthy has an edge over Brad Childress, Lovie Smith has handled McCarthy's Packer teams. Smith's Bears teams have won 4 straight in Green Bay with the Packers scoring no more than 20 points.

McCarthy's 1st game as Green Bay coach was a 26-0 loss to the Smith/Bears combo. They won their Chicago game that year but lost both games in 2007 27-20 at home and 35-7 at Chicago. The Chicago games were 2/3rds of the Packers losses last season. McCarthy has yet to win a meaningful game against Chicago.

Overall the Bears lead the series 89-79-6. From 2001-2003 the Pack took 6 staight against the Bears.

Green Bay is a 4 point favorite. Can the Bears go past 4 and make it 5 straight at Lambeau?

Per NY Times, "Based on early figures, about 62.5 percent of all eligible voters cast ballots, just shy of the 62.6 percent figure that was recorded in the 1964 election. But that figure will climb and almost certainly set a new record as the remaining votes are counted."

Election Info Bits....

1. Barack Obama is the first Illinois based President since Lincoln. Interestingly Ronald Reagan was Illinois born while Lincoln was born in Kentucky.

2. Last 4 Presidents to become Senators: Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy and Truman.

3. New Senators will be appointed in place of Obama and Biden. Obama was preceded by Peter Fitzgerald. Others to hold his Senate seat include: Carol Mosely Braun, and Everett Dirksen. Biden was preceded by J. Caleb Boggs. His Senate seat was previously held by: Daniel Rodney and Coleman Dupont.

4. Obama won Massachusetts home of John Kerry, lost Tenesee and Arkansas home states of Gore and Clinton, also lost Georgia Jimmmy Carters home state. South Dakota home of 1972 candidate George Mcgovern also went Republican.

5. Obama volunteers made 1,053,791 get out the vote calls on election day. This equates to 1.6 percent of his total votes.

6. Obama wore a Chicago White Sox cap on his 1st day as President-elect.

7. Obama's undergraduate degree is from Columbia. Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt studied law there. Obama has a Harvard law degree.

8. Obama's chief strategist David Axelrod was a Chicago Tribune reporter. Losing VP candidate Sarah Palin was a journalis major.

9. Once again the better military record lost. Since 1992 George Bush WW II pilot, Bob Dole WW II soldier, 2000 Al Gore Vietnam Veteran, 2004 John Kerry decorated Vietnam veteran and now Joh McCain Vietnam prisoner of war have lost presidential elections. Obama was 14 when Vietnam ended.

10. Obama was born in 1961. Other '61ers include: Rae Down Chong, Scott Baio, Wayne Gretzky and Amy Sedaris.

Yes We Can! Yes we Did!

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that's on my mind tonight is about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing -- Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America -- the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.

At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs and a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.

When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.

She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We Shall Overcome." Yes we can.

A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes we can.

America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves -- if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

Packers/Vikings Historical Notes

The Packers lead the Vikings series 49-44. Since Brad Childress became coach of Minnesota they have lost 5 straight to the Packers. Last loss to the Vikes was 2005.

This will start the season's second half, it being game # 9. Looking at the players who have worn 9 we have mostly punters (Bryan Barker 2004), back up QB's (Jim McMahon (1995-96), Kickers (Dean Dorsey 1988) and a Packer Hall of Famer Jug Earp who wore the highest single digit number in 1928.

Earp was in the Packers 1st Hall of Fame Class, playing for the Green and Gold from '22 to '32. He also wore 38 in 1929, 39 in 1930-32, and 29 in 1927-28.

Finally, prior to the Vikings Minneapolis had an NFL team called the Red Jackets from 1921 to 1930. They were 0-8 v. the Packers. The Packers beat the Red Jackets twice in 1929 as they won their first league title.

Week 9 Pick

This weeks suicide pool pick is the Bears over the Lions. I will continue to pick against the Lions until I can't. Another correct pick although the Lions came close. Didn't know I'd have to rely on Rex Grossman!

For blog purposes I will keep track of my picks and post one each week.

Week 1 Cowboys over Browns
Week 2 Giants over Rams
Week 3 Bills over Raiders
Week 4 Chargers over Raiders
Week 5 Panthers defeat Chiefs
Week 6 Vikings over Lions
Week 7 Texans over Lions
Week 8 Redskins over Lions
Week 9

Textable Game Review: Loss to Titans

This game was about the red zone. The Packers out gained the Titans but got FG's in TD situations. Then the defense tired and the Titans stayed unbeaten.

Packers/Titans Keys

Titans specific keys:

1. Play the run so the Titans have to pass.

2. Team strengh is interceptions must pick Collins off.

3. Cover kicks...Titans are 1st in kick returns.

4. Get big play from Jennings.

5. Bigby is back will this help against the run?

Rogers Dollars

Rogers is signed thru 2014, $ 65 million in the contract, $ 20 million guaranteed. Works for me.

So now that Rogers will be around...do I get a Rogers jersey or a Jordy Nelson jersey?
