Have a Good Read: Where is Joe Merchant?

Wednesday 5 Interesting Things
From Mike Lombardi What do William McKinley, the 25th U.S. president; Dom Capers, defensive coordinator of the Packers; and Colts new big-play wide receiver Pierre Garcon have in common? They all went to lovely Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio.

Friday Five
Packers @ Rams Keys
Let me start by saying that in preface to game keys I will always list the following 3 for each game.
First the team needs to scoreTD's not FG's. Good teams do this.
First the team needs to scoreTD's not FG's. Good teams do this.
Second each game the special teams need to make a +1 play be it a TD return, a key punt, strong coverage work, blocked extra point.
Third turnovers need to be created.
Call that general keys, my philosophy of football etc
In addition the Packers need to:
1. Have a more rhythmic effective passing game
2. Not allow the Rams Stephen Jackson to control the game

Have a Good Read: Where Men Win Glory

Pat Tillman was not a simple pigeon hole guy. He was a football player, a thinker, a risk taker, a lover.
There are dual or perhaps triple sad parts: how Tillman died, why it happened and how it was used and covered up in the aftermath.
The answers are by freindly fire, because of a broken vehicle and an obsession with meaningless time lines and to serve political ends.
Its worth reading all of those stories and more in this excellent book!

5 Things Thursday
1. NFL Suicide Pick... Minnesota over Detroit. FYI Week 1 was a winner
2. They were very specific: scumbags meant guys douchebags meant girls- George Carlin
3. Since the NFL went to a 16-game schedule in 1978, 442 teams won their opener. Of those teams, 233 went to the playoffs and 136 won division crowns. Now, compare those numbers to the 442 teams that lost the first game of the season. Of that group, only 103 went to the playoffs and only 58 captured their division.
5. Medal of Honor awarded

One can read the book as a justification for continuing the war in Afghanistan by ending any chance of things like the Taliban existing. One can also view it as a justification to end the war as there are some things that never can change.
A deep and sad book with a lesson each must determine.

Criticism is necessary and useful; it is often indispensable; but it can never take the place of action, or be even a poor substitute for it. The function of the mere critic is of very subordinate usefulness. Have a Good Read: Post Office

The main character matter of factly drinks beer, whiskey, scotch etc. and works nites at the post office. Women are here and there sometimes for awhile sometimes perishing after a reunion.
Superbly cynical and pretty funny too.

The Government takeover.....
In Cumberland County North Carolina 70 percent of people who visit Cape Fear Valley Hospital have either Medicare, Medicaid or Tricare. One way or another all government health insurance. Granted this is high due to the presence of the large and growing Fort Bragg.
Still about 15 percent of the population has medicare and another 15 percent medicaid. This adds up to 30 percent already insured by the government.
Any health reform will at the worst be a continuation of the governments role not an initiation!

Have a Good Read: Inherent Vice
As is typical of Pynchon sprawling, but not as sprawling as some of his past work.
A trippy perhaps nostalgic look back at the butt end of the 60's as they bled into the 70's.
An appealing main character and some intriguing sub plots makes it a good read.
