Cuts

19 released today most notably RB's Vernard Morency and Norah Herron. Herron departs with a Green Bay total of 271 yards rushing and 5 TD's total. Morency acquired for Samkon Gado had 520 yards in 2 years.

This means rookie free agent Kregg Lumpkin of Georgia is the # 3 HB.

The team is w/o a long snapper and has only 3 tackles on the roster so the movement is not done.

Rodgers Nite

Aaron Rodgers was 1-1 for 68 yards and a td giving him a rating of 158.3 in the pre season closer v. Titans.

Packers and USC

Article points out that since 2004 USC has had a bunch of players drafted. Whether the players have been that good is not clear.

During that period the Packers have drafted 0 USC players. They have drafted players from Montana State, North Carolina A&T, Iowa, Colorado and Central Florida though....

Coach on Camp

"I think the less practices helped us in that. I felt our football players were out here working to improve. They weren't out here trying to survive. They were thriving individually, and I think that's important and I think the schedule helped them."

Training Camp-Pre Season-Regular Season

Training camp has ended, no more public practices for the team.

Thursday is final pre season against Titans finishing the exhibition games against Tennessee for the 7th straight year.

Former Packer kicker Craig Hentrich is still a Titan. Hentrich wore 17 for GB, no other Packer has worn it since. Currently Johnny Quinn a WR is wearing 17, it does not appear he will make the team.

The regular season opener is September 8 at Lambeau v. the Vikes. Last opener against Minnesota was 7 September 2003 a 30-25 loss. That day Brett Favre had a 41.6 rating with a single td against 4 ints.

EMK

Edward Moore Kennedy, aka Senator Ted attained office in 1962. At that time he was junior to Leverett A. Saltonstall. Upon Saltonstall's retirment in 1967 he became senior senator from Massachusetts.

Since then Kennedy has served with Edward Brooke, Paul Tsongas and John Kerry.

It's a Half Hour from the End of your shift...

& you get a call- actually a transfer. Then a page from dispatch saying the hospital is adamant about this occurring prior to shift change. Happy late call!

But if they are adamant and it's urgent shouldn't the patient stay at the hospital. Yes the hospital is your areas busiest but when you arrive it's calmer than normal.

The geriatric patient whom you've had before is 100% normal as ever. Perhaps she will miss breakfast? No, she has a feeding rube.

You get her to the rig and run fast and silent. Arrive at ye olde nursing home where the level of concern is just above terminal indifference.

Deliver patient to her bed. Get off about half an hour late.

Somewhere along the line some misrepresented, lied, told tales etc. This makes your bottom of the heap position clear. You go home with another divot in the chip on your shoulder.

Reminder

Here's a hit of perspective. After being drubbed 34-6 Green Bay is 0-2 in the pre season. In Ray Rhodes single season-1999- Green Bay was 4-0 pre season. That team didn't make the play offs nor did Rhodes continue as coach.

34-6 Pre Season Loss

Donal Driver: "Garbage awful, awful, awful, awful. We're not scaring anyone and we feel like we have an offense that should scare anybody."

Coach McCarthy: "thought the 49ers played with better pad level than us. I was not pleased with our pad level and our footwork throughout the game. I thought they were more physical than we were, and that's...you know. I need to get that fixed. So I did not have the team prepared, and we will get that done this week."

Coach McCarthy: "We came out here to play a football game. I'm sure on a personal note it was nice to see some people, but this is our profession. We didn't do our job tonight, and we'll definitely learn from this experience."

Didn't see or hear the game not feeling like I missed much!

Another take "Don’t read too much into the Packers huge loss to the 49ers. They had a short week and a long trip. That is a bad combination in the pre season.:

Jets Streak

Interestingly the Packers longest active losing streak to a team is to the Jets at 3. At the opposite end they have won 7 straight against the 49ers who they play this weekend in a pre season game.

Gut Wrong

Checking out the truck and equipment yesterday I was flipping through the ETT tubes. I got a strong feeling- a gut feeling per se- that I would intubate a patient.

No, No I don't think so. Nothing even close. So if my gut feeling does that mean my gut is shrinking? No, No I don't think so.

Speaking of ET tubes.....they have a month and year expiration date. Why is that? What changes or deteriorates that causes them to expire? I'm sure the vast majority of tubes are tossed sans use.

Hawk Out

LB A.J. Hawk is out with a chest injury. He will neither practice nor play against the 49ers this week. Reports indicate this is Hawk's 1st missed practice as a Packer after never missing a practice, game or workout at OSU.

Ted's Team

Just 10 of the 80 train camp players pre date Thompson's 01/05 arrival. Left: Driver a pre Thompson packer

This means 43 of the final 53 or + 80% will be Thompson's guys. Donald Lee a Thompson guy.

Utah State, eh?

Jarret Bush could be nickel back played at Utah State. Interestingly there have been 11 Packers hailing from Utah State. This is more, for instance, than Florida which has produced only 10 Packers.

Rules

Some of the more experienced medics I work with will say when you work with me I have a couple of rules. One guy says treat all patients better than they expect.

Recently we picked a patient up from a med center operation. He'd had stroke like symptons- left side leg weakness, left side arm issues and facial droop for 3-4 days. He told the facility he had taken hypertension meds at one point but had given them up and is a smoker.

The doctor gave him a pointed lecture that he should havecome sooner, that stopping his meds was "stupid" and that going outside to smoke prior to our arrival was "stupid." Objectively this maybe all true.

I got into ems due to a belief that each person has worth and dignity. This goes for all including folks who delay treatment, smoke and choose not to take meds.

So my rule might go something like this: each patient has worth and dignity and we don't judge them we treat them.

I assessed the patient, placed a precautionary saline lock, and chatted with him on the way to the hospital. I didn't judge his prior actions. To do so would have violated a rule of mine.

Curious Quote

"It was a good night," Rodgers said. "The signs I saw in the stands were very positive and encouraging."

Not sure this should have been his focus?

Packers Preseason Game # 1

1st exhibition is against Cincinati. GB played the Bengals in 2006 and lost 48-17. Prior to that Packers and Bengals had not had a pre season game since 1987. Coach McCarthy is 1-1 in pre season openers winning last year against Steelers losing the year prior to the Chargers.

Antonio Chatman (Right) Packer punt return leader from 2003-2005 plays for the Bengals. It was against Cincy that Brett Favre threw his 1st GB TD pass in 1992.

Woodson TD's

Since joining the Packers Charles Woodson has 3 defensive TD's. 2 were on int's and 1 a fumble return. Only one was at home.

For his career he has 5 TD's all on defense, none on returns.

Cali Note

In 1981 the Packers drafted QB Rich Campbell in the 1st rd. Campbell played at California as did 2005 1st rounder Aaron Rodgers. In between no Cal Bears were drafted by the Packers.

In his career Campbell was 31 of 68 while Rogers is already 35 of 59.

However in between these two Tony Gonzalez was a 1997 1st rounder and Kyle Boller a 2003 1st rounder.

Favre Trade Perspective

As it stands Packers are sure to receive a 4th round pick. Recent 4th rounders include Brady Popinga and Will Blackman and in 1992 Edgar Bennet. They'll get a 3rd rounder if he plays 50 percent of snaps. Some 3rd rounders: Joey Thomas, B.J. Sander, William Henderson, Brett Conway. A 2nd rounder if team makes playoffs and he plays 70%. 2nd rounders include: Greg Jennings, Nick Collins, Chad Clifton and Dave Drechsler. Super Bowl win gets a 1st.

The trade has been made the outcome will be years in developing.

Hasta 4

Brett Favre traded to the Jets. Packers accomplish goals of A. keeping Rogers as starter B. trading Favre out of division and C. trading Favre out of conference.

A Packers statement read, "It is with some sadness that we make this announcement, but also with the desire for certainty that will allow us to move the team and organization forward in the most positive way possible. "

So forth and forward into the Rogers era.

It's about Football stupid

After the NFC Title loss I wrote: "What concerned me most was the QB play. Favre looked old and not just on the last pass. He looked done in by the weather. When he moved and threw it didn't work. The legondary gun slinger threw about a 5 yard pass to a TE on 3rd and 15.

I heard Ron Wolf say recently that Favre tilts the field in his favor. Certainly in this game he did not as the little Manning beat him.

I don't know that he should retire or that it Rogers time, but this is most questions I've ever had about him."

Bob Mcginn the who provides the finest Packer coverage out there wrote this on 5 August: "

From a purely football perspective, the organizational shift against Favre began that November night in Dallas, gained steam in the arctic cold of Soldier Field and became a blaze during Favre's pathetic second-half showing against the New York Giants with a Super Bowl there for the taking.

Just about everyone who counted in the football department reached the conclusion that Favre could never win another championship. His dismal playoff record in the past decade couldn't be overlooked. And the Packers concluded that it would be the mother of all mistakes if Aaron Rodgers got away without being properly evaluated as a starter."

So with all the emotion there's a double look at the football side. From my passionate and amatar perspective I had doubts and from the rational and professional side there were doubts, too. As things end lets all remember that.

Why Not?

Pt. stung multiple times by bees. Certainly she was symptomatic with a swollen tongue, difficulty breathing, etc. An IM shot of benadryl and then a SQ of epi 1/10 and she came around. Then a neb treatment that cleared up wheezing. By the time she was in the ambulance she was off o2 and feeling fine.

She asked me why do I have to go to the hospital? I kind of edged around saying well they have to check your lungs, it's serious we don't know what can happen etc.

It did get me thinking why does she need to go? The symptoms from the allergic reaction were gone. Vitals, pulse ox etc. were fine. Why does she need to go to the hospital? Diabetics after D 50 need to eat and be stable and they can avoid transport....why not this pt.?

Talent Behind Favre

I recently emailed college football expert Phil Steele and asked what the 'PS' numbers of the Packers quaterbacks were. A PS# takes into account several recruiting rankings of high school/juco players. A PS#2 means that's the average of rating a players gets, a PS # 466 lower etc.

Here is his answer:

Matt Flynn was PS#17 QB when he signed at LSU so he was a VHT. Brian Brohm was PS#8 QB when he signed at Louisville so he was a VHT. Aaron Rodgers was PS#14 JUCO when he signed at California so he was a VHT. All 3 of the contestants were VHT’s! Thanks - Phil Steele

So as they began college all were in the top 20 in the nation. As Favre is now gone it can't be said that there isn't talent after Favre.

Favre Back

So, Favre is in Green Bay and ready to play. Supposedly he will 'compete' with Rogers for starting QB slot.

So, if he wins the job is it the worst thing? Maybe that means Rogers is a never was than a might be. And they have 2 rookies who could fight to be the next QB. Could Rogers be the one on the outs?

The Known Alcoholic or is he?

Older gentlemen, had fallen on his floor. Been down for several hours when a neighbor found him. Looked like a lift assist, minor bandaging and refusal.

Then there's vodka on the counter. Neighbor says he drinks 1/2 of a half gallon bottle of vodka each nite. So my partner, fire and police decide he's drunk and must go in. Call is made to med control and we get order to transport.

I was treating the patient. He didn't smell of alcohol. He had been down for 3-8 hours and his vodka bottle was a few feet away. I didn't see how he could be all that intoxicated. Granted he has a little trouble with the day of the week, but it didn't seem abnormal to me.

When we got to the hospital he was tested for alcohol and registered at 0.00. But most of the folks on the scene knew he was an alcoholic. Sure, probably about every other nite he is blotto, but not this nite.

I am fairly proud that I didn't jump to conclusions and assessed the patient without preconceptions. Not as proud I didn't stop my more senior partner from calling the hospital.
