Gut Wrong

Checking out the truck and equipment yesterday I was flipping through the ETT tubes. I got a strong feeling- a gut feeling per se- that I would intubate a patient.

No, No I don't think so. Nothing even close. So if my gut feeling does that mean my gut is shrinking? No, No I don't think so.

Speaking of ET tubes.....they have a month and year expiration date. Why is that? What changes or deteriorates that causes them to expire? I'm sure the vast majority of tubes are tossed sans use.

Expiration dates only let us know how long the company suggests that the equipment is good for, before replacement. The tubes may be good for much longer, but just have not been tested for longer. Or the tubes may have been shown to have bacterial growth after that amount of time. The packaging may break down or tear.

Your gut has nothing to do with predicting the future.
