Woodson Moves Up

Charles Woodson returned an INT to temporarly give the Packers a lead.  This is his 6th carreer TD Int return.

This is half the amount of all time leader Rod Woodson and ties him with: Aaron Glenn, Derick Brooks, Ronde Barber and Chris Mcallister.

The only active player ahead of the guys at 6 pick six is Minneosta's Darren Sharper.

Week 4 Pick Works

For week 3 I picked the Chargers over Oakland.  The Chragers started slow but got the win.

For blog purposes I will keep track of my picks and post one each week.

Week 1 Cowboys over Browns
Week 2 Giants over Rams
Week 3 Bills over Raiders
Week 4 Chargers over Raiders

Keys Review

1.  Pivotal Game:  Not so much an in game key as a key to the result.  3-1 teams make the playoffs 60+ % of the time while 2-2 teams have a 1-3 chance of post season football.

2.  Secondary:  Not bad, overall.  The scheme didn't chnage and the results were acceptable.  Biggest problem was tackling on running plays.

3.  Heat and Depth:  Certainly did play a role.  The defense wore down but often times the offense gave them no break.

4.  Grant got his 15 attempts...and 20 yards.  Team has now lost a game when Grant gets it 15 times.  To date Grant is a huge disapointment whether its availability, production or ball security.

5.  The Punter:  No help what so ever.  Time for Frost to leave us!

Turnovers:  Pretty killing although 1st int was on Jackson not Rogers.

Special Teams:  Big return to start the game, gave up one to the Bucs.  As mentioned punter was terrible.

TD's not FG's  That good red zone field goal forcing defense should have paid off...

Textable Game Review: Bucs Loss

In a pivotal game the Packers couldn't run but could turn the ball over. Big plays got them a small lead, but as the game ended mistakes ended their chances.

Week 4 Pick

Week 4 suicide pool pick is the Chargers over the Raiders. The 'bolts have it going, the raiders have things not going!

Bucs game keys

1. pivotal game. a win doubles the chances of making the playoffs. 3 and 1 will fell better than 500.
2. Secondary is banged up. How will Williams due for a full game? Who will play safety?

3. Will Grant finally have an impact? Team has not lost when they get him 15 carries.

4. The punter. Needs a good game. Will a bad see him go by by?

5. The heat. It will be 80 or higher. Will there be the depth needed say at DL or WR?

TB/GB

These teams were division rivals and played 2x a season until 2001, starting in 1977.  The initial game was in Tampa Bay and won by Green Bay 13-0.  The final division game was in 2001 won 21-20 by Green Bay.

The Bucs did not  lose to Green Bay from 1979 to 1981.  No games were played in 1982 due to the strike.

The teams played a post season game in 1998 won by Green Bay 21-7.

Since the end of the twice a year series the teams have played 3 times with TB winning two.  Packs last Tampa trip was 2003 when they won 20-13.

No Crosses

Interesting....no former Cowboys play for Green Bay and no former Packers play for Dallas. The teams seem to fish for talent in different ponds....

However Dallas long snapper L.P. Ladoucer and Green Bay QB Aaron Rogers were college teammates at Cal.

Week 3 Packers Cowboys Keys

Let me start by saying that in preface to game keys I will always list the following 3 for each game.

First the team needs to score TD's not FG's. Good teams do this. Second each game the special teams need to make a play be it a TD return, a key punt, strong coverage work, blocked extra point. Third turnovers need to be created. This along with special teams can lead to short fields making it easier to get 6 than three.

A long punt return to the 20 giving the offense a short TD drive is one way these can occur. Another might be good kick coverage pinning a team deep, then a force fumble leading to another short TD.

Call that general keys, my philosophy of football etc.

1. Pass Rush: Likely an un-rushed Romo will be able to riddle the Packers secondary. Therefore Kampman, KGB et al. are going to need to show up.

2. Pass Protection: OLB Ware and his bunch need to be contained so Rogers and the receivers can make big plays.

3. McCarthy: There have been rumblings that in big games his game plans are not right. I'll plead agnostic, but it'd be nice to see the offense start off well.

4. TO: Like or hate him he makes plays- 2nd most TD catches ever. Last year Woodson DNP in the Cowboys game. This year he is playing and perhaps he can help slow him.

5. 3rd Down: If the teams are even then 3rd downs should make or break some drives, determine 3 or 7 points etc. Thru 2 game Dallas is 67% in converting 3rd downs while Green Bay is 50.

McCarthy: "Tony Romo is a playmaker. I like the way he plays the game. I think he's very stable as far as his disposition. He doesn't get rattled."

McCarthy: "I think our run blitzing has been very effective."

Cowboys Packers Series

The Packers and Cowboys have played since 1960. There were 5 year gaps between 1984 and 1989 and 1999 and 2004.

Tom Landry coached the Cowboys in many of these games including the 1st time the Cowboys won in 1970.

The famed Ice Bowl was a Cowboy/Packers game, in which Cowboy wideout Bob Hayes played. That year he led the league with 13 TD receptions.

In the 90's the Cowboys dominated often ending Green Bay's season in the playoffs. Packer WR Sterling Sharpe caught in a 29 YD TD in the 1994 game. In 1995 running back (& current assistant coach) Edgar Bennett(pictured left) scored a touchdown. In 1996 Brett Favre hit Brooks twice and Keith Jackson once but the Packers still lost.

In fact Favre never beat Dallas in Texas including last years 37-27 loss when he left the game injured. Aaron Rogers stepped in and played for the injured # 4.

Rogers now looks to help the Packers continue their own streak in the series. Green Bay has won at home V. Dallas in 1989, 1991, 1997 and 2o04.

Streaks, great players, great history and great current teams will be on display Sunday nite.

Next....

Next is the Cowboys at home next Sunday nite. Unlike last time it is at Lambeau. Also it is on NBC not NFL Network so more can see the game.

We'll begin on this game on Wednesday....

Perspective

Some numbers 21,1,23. Pack led bu 21, trailed by 1 and won by 23.

Rogers 2 game QB rating 117.8 Favre's 2 game rating 104.1

10 points: Packers/Lions

  1. Gregg Lumpkin made his debut catching and running the ball.
  2. Early penalties included false start and delay of game.
  3. Korey Hall was hurt in the 1q.
  4. Jordy Nelson 1st catch, 1st TD on same play.
  5. Rogers did have a fumbled snap but recovered.
  6. Lions challenged a call whether Rogers was out of bounds on a scramble and lost.
  7. AJ Hawk notched a sack.
  8. Jordy Nelson played in a single WR run heavy formation.
  9. There were some drops inlcuding Jackson in the 4q.
  10. TD scored by Jackson out of 1 WR formation mentioned above.

Game 2 review

Overall Keys:

1. Score TD's Not FG's. All sorts of TD's on offense and defense.
2. Special Teams Play: Blackmon is must watch to go the distance, Frost's dropped snap was inexscusable.
3. Turnovers: Plenty to put the Lions away

1. Score Early: They got up 21-0 but the Lions didn't play dead.

2. Pressure Kitna: I said he's turnover prone! There were sacks and some good pressure what was needed.

3. How Long can Grant Go? Grant played and didn't look good. Didn't see much shake or cutback he must still be hurt.

4. Rogers 1st road start. No worries.

5. Less Penalties: There were penalties in all phases of this game, its not where it should be.

Week 2 Pick

The suicide pool is as follows; pick one winner each week. you can't pick a team twice. lose and you are out.

For week 2 I take the Giants over the Rams. Sure could be a trap for the Giants and the Rams are probably not as awful as week 1, but I feel this is a safe pick.

For blog purposes I will keep track of my picks and post one each week.

Packers @ Lions Week 2 Keys

Let me start by saying that in preface to game keys I will always list the following 3 for each game.

First the team needs to score TD's not FG's. Good teams do this. Second each game the special teams need to make a play be it a TD return, a key punt, strong coverage work, blocked extra point. Call that general keys, my philosophy of football etc.

Packers v. Lions Keys:

1. Score Early: A couple of early TD's could completely remove the fight of a fragile Lions team.

2. Pressure Kitna: He's not mobile and can be turnover prone, pressuring him could exacerbate these tendencies.

3. How Long can Grant Go? Grant's hamstring is fragile. How long he can go could mean an easier game or not.

4. Rogers 1st road start. No reason to expect him to rattle, but the road is different than supportive Lambeau.

5. Less Penalties: One thing that can keep you close to an inferior team is penalties. Less mistakes will mean less opportunities for the Lions.

Packers/Lions Quotes

McCarthy: "Greg Jennings is definitely an up-and-coming frontline player in this league. I thought the performance that he had on Monday night was hopefully a start of a great season for hi."

On the 50/50 Run/Pass ratio: McCarthy: "Not that important. To score points, that's really the bottom line. I think it would be nice to be 50-50. I don't think that's really the way today's NFL is played over the long haul."

McCarthy: "“A scrambling quarterback is important. It is a whole another factor the
defense has to play to. Sometimes it dictates certain coverages that you’re able to see on particular situations on third down."

Lions Marinelli "“Well, I just think our division is really good. I’ve already started watching and there’s a lot of proof in the pudding in this division right now. It’s very physical right now on both – I think all three teams. You look at Chicago, Minnesota and Green Bay, (they) are all very, very physical football teams in terms of running the football and they all play excellent defense and all have good quarterbacks. It’s a very strong division and each one counts big and we’ve got a lot to prove this weekend.”

Kitna on GB defense: "The same thing they always do. They’re the most physical defense in the league in terms of 11 guys across the board. That’s what they’re going to do."

Marinelli on the Lions season opener "“I thought we did some good things offensively,” said Marinelli. “We had the one turnover, which is one too many. The protection was solid. Our commitment to try to run the ball was there and I thought, overall, we threw the ball fairly well. But we’ve got to play better defense, and I thought the special teams was solid.”"

Packers 24 Vikings 19 Review

Overall Keys:

1. Score TD's Not FG's. 2 offensive TD's 1 on special teams 2 FG's 1 made.
2. Special Teams Play: Blackman's TD return off a great Tracy White block.
3. Turnovers: Got an int to kill the Vikes last drive.

Below are specific Vikings game keys.

1. QB play: For sure Rogers got it done. Deep ball to Jennings. TD while moving to Hall. Running for 1st downs. No turnovers.

2. WR's make plays. Jennings had the deep catch to get the offense moving. Driver had a 25 yarder.

3. New Special Team elements New Punter Frost put 1 inside the 20 and had a 43 yard net average. One FG was blocked

4. Block the Line: Not much pressure on the QB and Grant had a big run, job done.

5. Vikings missing OT. Pack didn't do a whole lot vs. sub OT's.

week 1 pick

the suicide pool is as follows; pick one winner each week. you can't pick a team twice. lose and you are out.

my first pick is dallas on the road at cleveland. dallas is a fine regular season team. cleveland is overated with a poor secondary.

for blog purpses I will keep track of my picks and post one each week.

Keys to Packers Vs. Vikings Week 1

Below are specific Vikings game keys.

1. QB play. For years you could say the Packers are at worst even at QB, that Favre gives them a chance to win any game. Now with Rogers things are much more unknown. His opposite number is also young and questionable. A 400 yard game might not be needed, but solid play will be.

2. WR's make plays. As a group the Packers WR's are their best. I rate Greg Jennings as their # 1 player.

3. New Special Team elements ie Punter and long snapper. Production needed mistakes are not.

4. Block the Line: The Vikings line with WilliamsX2 and Allen is supposed to be special. Can the never the same 2 days in a row Packers line block them?

5. Vikings missing OT. Their LT Mckennie is suspended. How much advantage can the Pack take of this?

Packer # 12's

The Packers return 21 of 22 starters, the exception being at QB. Here # 12 Aaron Rogers replaces Brett Favre.

In Packers history 16 players have worn # 12. Hall of Famer Arnie Herber wore it in 1930. Lombardi era back up QB Zeke Bratkowski wore it from 1963 to 1971. Lynn Dickey wore it for one of his Packer seaons 1980. T.J. Rubely infamous for his performace aginst the Vikings during the Holmgrem years wore it in 1995.

Arnie Herber ((jump passing at right) played for the Packers from 1930-1940 and later the Giants. Herber wore 12 in 1930 his rookie season. He was a premier passer throwing 81 td's in his career. He threw TD's in NFL title games in 1936, 1938, and 1939.

Wearing # 12 in 1980 Lynn Dickey threw 15 TD's against 25 Int's, 4 of those going to James Lofton. That year the Packers swept the Vikings winning 16-3 and 25-13.

Zeke Bratkowski's best year with 12 on his chest was 1967 when he threw 5 TD's. He started 2 consecuctive games beating the Lions 27-17 and losing to the Vikings 10-7.

Aaron Rogers has worn 12, but now he has a chance to add achievment to his record.

Jared Allen "Hopefully, I can put my helmet square in the back of his spine. If I can do that and knock the ball loose, it’ll be a good day.”

Mike McCarthy: "Very good defensive line, probably the best defensive tackle tandem that we will play."

With the 53 man roster set what we have is.... a lot of Ted Thompson draft choices. 4 from the 2005 draft including Aaron Rogers, 7 from 2006 including both starting guards, 8 from 2007 including Korey Hall and 8 from 2008 including #2 QB Matt Flynn. That means 27 of the 53 are recent draftees.
