Barcelona World Race Sailor Info: Veolia Dismasts

Summary: At 1800 Veolia dismasted after rejoining the race from a repair stop in the Kerguelen Islands

Details:
  • When she lost her mast Veolia was approximately 1660 miles south-west of the SW tip of Australia and approximately 500 miles east of the Kerguelen Islands.
  • Veolia is now sailing towards Australia under jury rig.
  • PRB, Delta Dore and Veolia have all retired via losing their mast. All spars were built by Lorima.
  • Hugo Boss has gained 114 miles in the last 24 hours on leader Paprec Vibrac 2. The current gap is 36 miles.
  • Mutua Madrilena is fastest in the fleet at 18 knots.
  • Delta Dore has arrived in Cape Town

References: Lorima

Weather: NE 20-30 knots.

Quotes:

Jean Luc Nelias "At the first moment, you don't feel anything. You have to preserve the boat, so Bilou woke up and came on deck and we each took a knife to start to cut all the ropes and sail and rigging from the boat. There is no comment, no discussion. It's only after, when the mast is in the water that 'phew' there is a lot of emotion coming. It was a disaster. Bilou was very affected and me too certainly. It's a job, it's like that. We take a lot of pleasure from sailing and sometimes we are very disappointed. We've known that for a long time and it's always the same story...sometimes you are lucky, sometimes unlucky. That's all."

Alex Thomson "We are almost level with Perth now, and it makes me feel like we have come a long way; but we are only about halfway through!"

Roland Jourdain "We were sailing with full main sail and gennaker, the wind was maybe 20-22 knots. Suddenly there was a stronger gust, the boat went down into a wave and the mast broke. I was sleeping inside and Jean Luc was inside too doing a bit of work, he had just had some sleep. Really it was nothing unusual, we were doing the same as we do every day there was nothing different and we don’t really understand what happened."

Chasing Dickey

From Michael Silver's column, "Brett Favre set another record in the Packers' 33-14 victory over the Rams, surpassing Dan Marino to become the NFL's all-time leader with 61,405 passing yards. Now he merely needs to throw for 554 yards in his final two regular-season games to catch … Lynn Dickey ? That's right – Dickey has the Pack's franchise record for passing yards in a single season (4,458 in 1983)."

Quotes

"But the outcome will be decisively influenced by two nations that are now failing to do enough: the United States and China. While India is also growing fast in importance, it should be absolutely clear that it is the two largest CO2 emitters – most of all, my own country – that will need to make the boldest moves, or stand accountable before history for their failure to act."

We can’t predict how this will develop; we still have two weeks at sea during which time we will keep a very close eye on its evolution. The aggravation of this corrosion phenomenon could lead to the breakage of the upper part of the keel and a loss of control of the boat’s stability."

Damian Foxall "jp and I talk about other things apart from sailing and it keeps us entertained. It is impossible to be 100% for three months and you have to let off steam from time to time. 33 Packers 14 Rams

Looking at keys:

1. Stop Jackson. # 39 had 143 yards amongst the best in the league. He ran hard, giving out punishment. Did not accomplish this.

2. Handle the Blitz/Gash the Blitz Rams had no sacks, Pack had 2 passing TD's, 227 passing yards. The TD to Jennings came on a blitz when the Rams mangled a coverage.

3. D Line Pressure/Bash Bulger I'd rate the pressure as consistent if not dominant. GB had 4 sacks, 3 from line backers.

4. Run Ryan Run 18 for 55 'bout says it.

5. No turnovers That's a negative with a fumble and 2 ints, while the Rams had 2 ints.

Notes: Rams outgained 364 to 279.

Crosby kicked well... inside.

Robinson ran hard and shiftily on ko returns.

Opened both halfs in Big 5 and then did not see it again.

Bigby had 2 picks. Team record is 4 in a game by one player.

Favre set the all time yardage mark.

Dallas lost. If GB wins remaining 2 and another Cowboy loss Pack would have top seed. GB is @ CHI, H DET. Cowboys are @ CAR, @ WAS.

Pure Respect

Pure respect to Francis Joyon sailing the IDEC trimaran! From the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Leeuwin he needed 7 days 8 hours 12 minutes. This is over 3 days faster than current record holder Ellen Macarthur. Even more impressive is that he was 21 minutes faster than Orange II the current Jules Verne record holder which was fully crewed!

As he passed Cape Leeuwin he sent this classy message:

“I’m at the longitude of Cape Leeuwin at 01.33h UTC. IDEC is 1100 south of Australia. In reality, I am much closer to Antarctica and the temperature on board let’s one know that! To be precise, I’m 400 miles from the ice floes and 770 miles from the white continent itself, where the names of explorers like Shackleton and Dumont d' Urville are written. So far, the Antarctic has not been subjected to man’s greed, but let us hope that we will succeed in checking the global warming that would destroy its floes and wild life before destroying us. Here, it is fog, drizzle and mist; even the stormy petrels have disappeared in this cotton blanket.”

Barcelona World Race Sailor Info: Veolia is back

Summary: Veolia is back racing 840 miles back in 3rd place.

Details:
  • Veolia spent 35 hours fixing her engine while moored in the Kerguelen Islands

  • Hugo Boss is fastest in the 6 boat fleet at 16.2 knots.

Ted Corbitt

Ted Corbitt a distance runner recently passed away. Some excerpts from his obit:

"By his own count, Corbitt ran 199 marathons and ultramarathons, which are typically races of 50 or 100 miles or 24 hours. (Marathons are 26 miles 385 yards.) He won 30 of those races and never dropped out of one until he was 75, he said. He trained by running as many as 200 miles a week."

"At various times, Corbitt held American records in the marathon, the 100-mile run and the 25-, 40- and 50-kilometer events."

"His training regimens were legendary. For a time, he ran 200 miles or more a week, often in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx and Prospect Park in Brooklyn. He once ran the marathon distance every day for a month. He often ran a 31-mile loop around Manhattan in about 3:45. Sometimes he did two loops. He also trained with weights."

"Until 1973, he ran to work every day, sometimes making a 20- to 30-mile detour through Westchester."

Barcelona World Race: Delta Dore Dismasts

Summary: At approximately 0100 GMT Delta Dore dismasted. Port Elisabeth South Africa is 850 miles to the NW. Their jury rig is shown to the right.

Details:
  • Per Jeremy Beyou Delta Dore was under a reefed main and staysail sailing in 25 to 35 knots of wind when the mast fell backwards.
  • For safety Delta Dore had to cut the mast away. They are considering jury rig options and are not requesting outside assistance currently.
  • Paprec Vibrac 2 continues to lead with 2nd place Veolia Entertainment fastest at 17 knots.
  • Since the weekend 3 of the 9 boats have suffered damage that has caused them to stop racing.
  • PRB has reached Cape Town

References: Port Elizabeth South Africa

Weather: WSW then WNW 20 to 25 knots.

Quotes:

Jeremie Beyou "We have just been dismasted, we have wind from 300°, 25 knots increasing to 35 knots sometimes, and waves not too bad at about 4 metres. We were sailing with one reef in the mainsail and staysail (small headsail). The mast seems to have fallen backwards."

Mark Turner OC Events ""It's easy to become complacent about sailing around the world, but the last few days during which we have seen PRB lose the top 3 meters of their mast and Estrella Damm suffer severe damage to their rudder are a strong reminder just how hard it is to race at this kind of pace, on these 60-foot racing machines, racing around the planet non-stop. Nearly 10,000 miles in, and the damage toll is mounting."

J.P. Dick "In this weather condition we know we are sailing in an area where some growlers are a real possibility and we are heading towards a zone where we can see them. We are now definitely in a risky area."

Alex Thomson ". We celebrated in fine style with a wee nip of Johnny Walker and then it was back to work. Over the last 24 hours we have been taking it easy. The damage is a lot more severe, the shaft around the rudder stock is completely broken (this is the tube that surrounds the stock and holds the two bearings at the top and bottom of the stock together) and appears split horizontally."

Grant had 156 yards .

Secondary play ultimately stood up, even Bigby has a pick.

Crosby missed 2/3 kicking in the cold. He's still got to prove out in the cold.

Favre's got another long one- 80 yards to Jennings.

What a running catch and then TD return by Blackmon. 2nd Half: What a fumble recovery for a TD! Blackmon is my player of the game.

Nick Barnett 7 tackles, A.J. Hawk 6.

Kevin Harlan sure presents a fact filled broadcast.

Raiders @ Packers Halftime Hits

Until Porter caught that TD I was prepared to say no the Raiders win. Still unlikely but the chance has been made.

Fargas has 40 yards on 10 carries. His impact is less than his numbers.

LG Spitz and RG Coston have helped Grant to 88 yards.

Secondary play has been iffy. The good is Harris' looked like he was the receiver INT, the bad is Harris has given up some.

Crosby missed badly kicking in the cold. He's still got to prove out in the cold.

Favre's ball hasn't looked real zippy.

What a running catch and then TD return by Blackmon.

3rd down's Oak 2-6 GB 4-6.

Kevin Harlan sure presents a fact filled broadcast.

References: Brother Jonathan

Weather: West winds 25 to 30 knots.

Quotes:

Vincent Riou: "That’s life, it's not too serious - the events are quite simple, we were sailing about 20 knots under the big gennaker and Sebastien and I were down below with the auto-pilot on, looking at the weather conditions, when we hit a wave and heard a crack and we thought we had broken a halyard or something. At no time did we imagine that it could be the mast. When we went outside we saw the main sail was still in place but the top half of the mast was hanging down, the good thing is that we didn’t dismast, we can “recover” material and see if it is repairable or not."

Guillermo Altadil "en we finally got the boat under control we suddenly breached and saw that the leeward rudder was totally loose. We lowered the sail to have the boat totally flat, and took out the rudder to find that it was totally broken on one side as if it had received an impact from something in the water. We took the rudder down below to repair and laminate it, but the problem was actually putting it back in to the hull because of such big waves. We lost another part in the process and had to start all over again.
After about six hours of work we have managed to put the rudder back in and are able to control the boat. It’s not perfect but we are able to sail at quite a good speed."

Jonathan Mckee "The next 4 days look very windy. This could be one of the critical times in the race, to see who can make it through this first storm intact. We are hopeful."

Details:
  • When PRB dismasted they were at 45 degrees south, 630 miles from Cape Town South Africa. The upper 3 meters of the mast broke.
  • This is the 2nd time PRB has had rig problems, also dis masting in last years Route Du Rhum.
  • Paprec Virbac 2 now leads Veolia by 76 miles.
  • Best speed goes to Veolia at 20.7 knots.
  • Hugo Boss had another record setting 24 hours covering 500. 01 miles, average speed 20.83 knots. 6 December 14:15 gmt to 7 December 14:15 gmt

References: Cape Town South Africa

Weather: Winds of 20 knots or more will be standard.

Quotes:

Sidney Gavignet "Outside, it's not very pleasant, the air temperature is 11 degrees, the water is 10 degrees, a drizzle added to the spray completes the wet picture. I'm at the chart table, the autopilot is doing fine. Speed oscillates between 17 and 22 knots. I am listening to some music and I made myself a capuccino to write this morning message."

Jonathan Mckee "But the best thing was that we did not have to hand steer all the
time, so it was a much more relaxing night. You could sit at the nav station and control the pilot from there, just watching the instruments and feeling the heel. It was kind of like a video game. It was a very rainy night, so it was good to be mostly downstairs!"

High pressure from the west will bring some clearing. A cold front will then bring snow to Michigan but it will be south of Muskegon.

Quote

"The United States needs a new beginning. It cannot lie in the Tudor-Stuart-like alternation of the Bush-Clinton dynasties, nor in the macho militarism of Republicans who see war without end. It has to involve a fresh face that will reconcile the country with itself and the world, get over divisions — internal and external — and speak with honesty about American glory and shame."

The way to boot up a well life

Today re-boot to wellness.

An Explanation

Cars, co2 and global warming. Lumpen lifetstyles and obesity.

Accordingly we shovel snow to make a path for our cars first rather than so people can walk on the sidewalks.

Snow Poem

Boots on, walking in snow not on top of snow. Today surrounded by snow as snow has surmounted landscape.

Michigan 0-2

Greg Schiano, the Big East Coach of the Year in 2006, is 37-46 in seven seasons as Scarlet Knights coach. Rutgers will play Ball State in the International Bowl on Jan. 6. Schiano has turned down the Michigan coaching job.

Ball State's Brady Hoke maybe next. After 5 years at Ball State he is 22-36.

From a coach in the championship to those of the International Bowl.

Well done!

Quotes:

Andrew Cape "It’s rough and bumpy out here and it’s getting colder by the day. We’ve got 20-25 knots from the north and we are blasting along at 22 knots."

Dominique Wavre: "We had been going well throughout the night and right until this morning. Suddenly there was a big bang whilst we were going full speed and Michèle came to wake me up– the port rudder blade seemed to have broken or bent.
We quickly pulled down the head sail that was flapping around all over the place and it ended up in a pile on the deck; unusable all the same…"

Alex Thomson: ""It is very ironic to think that this time last year I had just arrived in Cape Town having been rescued by Mike Golding, and here I am a year later having set a new world record."

Barcelona World Race: Winds as high as 50 kts

Summary: PRB holds the lead with the fleet chasing most at 15 knots or more. The curve they have been sailing is flattening out and they are beginning a more strictly easterly course.

Details:
  • Hugo Boss shows a high speed of 20.7 knots.
  • Estrella Damm has a 24 hour run of 411 miles a single mile better than Hugo Boss.
  • Veolia and Hugo Boss are now past 40° south latitude.
References: Gough Island

Weather: NW wind starting at 25 and as high as 40.

Quotes: Alex Thomson: "I don’t think it will be long before we catch Veolia. We have up to twenty knots from the north and have the jibs and full main sail up and still a little underpowered still."

Sidney Gavignet "The speed is perhaps due to Youri Buenaventura. Salsa and sea in the south might seem like a funny mixture but I decided to give myself that pleasure, but there is the obvious lack of a partner since Jérémie doesn’t dance!"

Raiders @ Packers # 3

The Packers had no sacks V. the Cowboys. That is the first time this season and only the 2nd time in 30 games.

Raiders have allowed 30 sacks which is 10th worst.

Raiders have lost 10 consecutive December road games.

From their 1999 visit to Lambeau the Raiders have 1 player left- Tackle Berry Sims.

Aaron Rogers has a pulled hamstring. This makes Craig Nall the backup. After playing once last year and breaking his foot, Rogers is again showing his fragility. It's been three years since Nall last took a snap.

Favre: ""Do I think it will be completely (healed)? I doubt it. The streak, to me, I want to play because I think I can help this team win. I don't want to play to extend the streak and then just come out of the game or play bad or whatever."
