Have a Good Read: Telex From Cuba

An interesting book that covers Cuba in the immediate pre Castro period.  Includes interesting sexual questions about the Castro brothers.

The book reads easily with a fairly fast moving plot.  The characters are good.  Along with this  there are some fairly literary and non linear parts that don't detract from the more mainstream aspects.

Roz Says

My speech (or at least, what I wish I’d said):
I row across oceans to inspire people to take action on climate change. Something the ocean has taught me is that any challenge, no matter how huge, can be tackled if you break it down into little steps. When I rowed across the Atlantic it took me about a million oarstrokes. One stroke doesn’t get me very far, but you take a million tiny actions and you string them all together and you get across 3000 miles of ocean. You can achieve almost anything, if you just take it one stroke at a time.
And it’s the same with climate change. On a day like today, when we feel part of a huge global community, it’s easy to believe we can change the world. But there will be other days when maybe we feel alone, and that anything we do as individuals won’t really make a difference – that it’s just a drop in the ocean.
But every action counts. We all have it in our power to make a difference. In fact, we’re already making a difference – it’s just up to us to decide if it’s a good one or a bad one. Every time we switch the lights off, or choose to walk instead of drive, or say no to a plastic bag, it matters.
So we’re leading the way. Thank you all for making a difference for the better. Keep up the good work, have a fantastic 350 day, and together we’ll keep changing the world, heading towards a greener future, one stroke at a time.

Have a Good Read: Q's Legacy

By the author of 84 Charing Cross.  This books in an account of what happened after that ever popular book.

She made friends, a TV show was made and even a play.  You also learn about Hanff's back story prior to her book based fame.

One question that is not answered is did a number of books she wrote really "go down the incinerator"?

The books is enjoyable but despite its small size could be tightened up.

RIP Paul

Paul was a fellow paramedic at Fort Bragg EMS.

SPRING LAKE- Paul Ivan Boyer III, 54, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday while performing a job that he loved. Born in York County, PA, he was the son of the late Paul Boyer and Eleanor Crowther Boyer. He served 3 years active duty in the US Army and served in both the Army and Navy Reserves. Among his many accomplishments, Paul was an Eagle Scout, a 1974 graduate of York Vo-Tech, attended Durham County Community College, receiving his paramedic certificate and in June of this year, passed the National Paramedic Registry Exam. Prior to moving to NC, he was a law enforcement officer in West York, PA, as well as two other townships and was a Fire Fighter I for Reliance Fire Company of West York, PA, where he was a life time member. He drove ambulance for Grantley Fire Company and White Rose Ambulance Service. After moving to NC, he worked in several counties as a paramedic as well as an intermediate level. One of his most rewarding positions was driving Pediatric Critical Care ambulance for UNC Hospital. Paul was currently employed with the Womack Army Medical Center/ Fort Bragg EMS. He attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC and was very involved with Men of the Cross and Promise Keepers. Surviving is his sister, Jan Boyer of Durham and a host of friends and co-workers. Have a Good Read: The Few

An interesting story extremely well written.  Years before Pearl Harbor a handful of Americans were already fighting for Britain against Hitler.  Their story is full on interesting starting from the moment they leave America and struggle to even get to Europe.

Featured is Billy Fiske American Olympic bobsled champion who perished as an RAF pilot in the Battle of Britain.

This book has me interested in more Battle of Britain books!

Have a Good Read: Rowing the Atlantic

Having followed Roz since she began rowing the Pacific I was excited about this book. Then due to a recent move it appropriately took a circuitous route to my door.

It did not disapoint.  I learned the background to Roz's often mentioned two obituary exercise.  She may not have been prepared in the way of fixing cooking stoves, but as she found out and continues to show being mentally tough is more important.

The sub title is lessons learned on the Open Ocean.  She hews to this not getting into a stroke by stroke account but rather looking at key points and teaching us from there.

Highly reccomend the book and further suggest you become involved in Roz and her rowing and climate change activities.

Have a Good Read: Zero Option

Having recently done CBERNE training biological weapon that figures prominently in this book intrigued me.

Unfortunately the book has a plot that is over long or slow developing depending on how you look at it.  The characters are well drawn but buried in a shouldn't be slow book.

Have a Good Read: Too Fat to Fish

This is a funny but increasingly sad book as it progresses.  The Too Fat to Fish episode is a classic which I first saw on the Letterman show.  Perhaps the best story in the book is Artie as a cab driver with a crazy violent couple trying to avoid shitting his pants.

Also very good is memories of his child hood including the Jersey Shore, Franky Valli and Yankee Stadium.

Packers @ Vikings Keys

Let me start by saying that in preface to game keys I will always list the following 3 for each game.

First the team needs to score touch downs
not field goals. Good teams do this. Green Bay has 9 TD's while Minny. has 10.  Both teams have 6 three pointers.

Second each game the special teams need to make a +1 play be it a TD return, a key punt, strong coverage work, blocked extra point.  Will Blackman has 2 TD returns v. Vikings

Third turnovers need to be created. The Packers are +8 in turnovers, the Vikings + 6.

Call that general keys, my philosophy of football etc

In addition the Packers need to:

1.  Protect Aaron Rogers.

2.  Be patient and allow Favre to throw a pick or two.
