Weather: Conditions on the ground- Variable
It looks like we are going to come out of the recent weather funk and have a decent weekend. Temperatures in the 60's with no rain seen. A high pressure dome will drop from the north and warm us up. Rain doesn't come up again until Monday.
So, who is a weather obsessive?

Yesterday we had 100% chance of precip, today 90%. Yesterday we received .19 inches of rain, today so far .18. Judging by forecast and radar expect this to continue. May get into thunderstorms later.

We've had 8 days in a row of above normal temperatures, but April is still 1.6 degrees cooler than normal. Only 3 CDD's so far.

We've already got a tenth of an inch of rain and it looks to continue to mid day. Don't think it will get up even near half an inch. We look to go on about a 3 day roll of rain with precip all over the tier of states ranging from Iowa to Louisiana.
Here's a good way to look for weather windows. Judging by this I could camp tonite....if I have transport.

I watch a show on weapons. A rifle can shoot over a mile. Bullet hits target a human victim is
not mentioned.
Campus shooting where there are many too many victims.
200 million guns in America.
Military funeral procession-another victim-hometown soldier- Who would have thought I'd be planning my husband's funeral?-we can't imagine victims.
Bombings overseas shootings at home.
Where is the rage acquired?
Text messages of doom.
All demonstrations that contrary to the show weapons are not victimless!
American flags wave. Out of sadness or support? Victory or Victim? Politicians say we waste lives
in Iraq then retract. Isn't your first answer supposed to be correct?
Americans kill each other 10 times more often than our soldiers die in Iraq.
Until we expect victims we will continue to have victims.

At least it's sunny today. It's still 36 which seems like the popular temperature of late. The magical mythical 50 degree mark has now been put back to Tuesday. Continued dreary, cloudy and cold about sums it up.
Climate: Weather expectations
After another 1.7 inches of snow we are now at 13.7 inches for the month. This is considerably over the norm of 2.7 inches and also in excess of March's 11.3 inches. Also, to date we have had no days considered to be clear.

Michigan's output peaked in 1999 and has largely declined since then. I take this to be as much economic as anything done environmentally.
The next portion of the UN Climate change report will urge a re-framing from an environmental issue to an economic one.

My feeling about the current weather are probably summed up in this word: anxious. Upon rising this morning I saw a temp of 36 degrees. Hey above freezing, this got me feeling good.
Then in my inbox came a notice of a winter weather advisory. The radar has a glob of snow around us. The furnace is still on. Maybe some frustration, too!
We're expecting 3-5 inches, heavy winds, white outs etc. Wind is already at 22 knots. Enough! So the good weather momentum I was feeling is now stalled.

Adding insult 1 year ago a record of 73 degrees was set.

One of the current globabl warming countres is that actually the sun is warming and therefore is the cause. As Paul Abrams points out if the sun is warming then reducing greenhouse gases so this extra heat can escape is key. Action needs to happen to avoid long term economic hurt as it is already occuring in a part of India.

Weekly Poem
A homeless close to home.
On a day dark and rainy conditions are so that you can see opposing traffic lights well.
Stuck in yet puncturing an unoccupied life raft to get on with it.
Likely in a moving environment wind in charge snow moving across water being blown off top of waves.
An inexplicable Eskimo winter tracks in the snow again- denial no shoveling needed.
Why can't I buy just 2 spuds!
Get away from the gathering the headache moves off.
Napping with the luxury to wake in stages.

Just when I thought spring was going to re-start, the sun had more or less come out, temperature was 40, I had to read the forecast. It goes like this: snow, snow 2-3 inches, snow after midnight. Going to have to hold out until Friday for 50's. And that will only get us to normal highs.
While we live thru variable weather the climate continues to change and we can see it in everday activities. From The Economist: Farmers will plant most corn since 1944 due to ethanol demand. But, planting trees in snowy areas may enhance global warming.
Climbers can documentt global warming changes.
Lake Superior which has a reputation as a cold lake is warming faster than the surrounding land.

Today it's about temperatures. Our current reading of 30 degrees is far from abnormal for the US. There are readings in the 30's in places like New Mexico- 38 in Albuquerque, 30 at Brady Texas and Alabama which has a 30 degree spot in Alexander City.
Coldest of all is Crane Lake MN at 0 with Needles California warmest at 97.
For us the 30's will be as good as it gets until Tuesday. This afternoon we may even get Sun as an Easter nature treat.
As per usual when it comes to truth telling due to some interventions by the US and China yesterday's climate change impact report comes up a bit short. The US got a section stating that there will need to be reduction in greenhouse gases omitted. As one commentator said this puts the US in a position of enabling at the least, denial at the worst.
Today's closing comes from Orwell, "If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear." Preface to Animal Farm (1946)

I feel like I am writing a snow report for a ski lodge. Overnite another inch of fresh powder, with a one inch base now...
In addition to snow we also are having good 'ole freezing fog. This would be, "A fog the droplets of which freeze upon contact with exposed objects and form a coating of rime and/or glaze."
With an expected high of 28° this should be the low point for temps with a relative upswing set to take us up to 40-at least. & from the could be worse file- 1° at Ely Minn.
"We’re no longer arm-waving with models. This is empirical information on the ground." MARTIN PARRY, This is a quote from an author of the latest climate change report by a UN scientific panel.
For instance we are in an area that has seen temperatures increase up to 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit since 1970. Also, our area has seen several physical system changes such as in hydrology.
The impact that climate change will have is myriad and includes these: "the increased frequency of cardio-respiratory diseases due to higher concentrations of ground level ozone related to climate change." In North America due to more frequent and intense heat waves, "The growing number of the elderly population is most at risk."
Based on this we have some Senators ahead of the curve via looking at climate change as a national security issue. The UN Security Council is taking a similar approach.
It's as if we now will live with the day to day variation of our weather, in the context of climate thru the proven lens of climate change.

Maine has declared a state of emergency and over 200,000 people are without power. Marquette has a new record for snowfall in April- 24 inches! On Lake Superior Stannard Rock sustained winds near 50 MPH and still has 35 knots winds this morning. The snow is expected to continue along with 20 foot waves!
Climate wise this snowfall season is the 11th snowiest on record for Marquette. 5 of the 15 snowiest seasons have come since 2000.
For today and Saturday our weather will be all about lake affect snow. The biggest total mentioned is 4 inches expected tonite and into Saturday.
All in all, Easter sleigh bells perhaps?

If there is 'indian summer' then we must currently be experiencing 'eskimo winter'. Snow covers the ground, wind chill is again relevant (@ 10°) and it will continue ("another 'shot of cold air friday')
In March the last below freezing reading was 30 degrees on the 21st. Yesterday's low was 24 and today has not yet been above 25 degrees. It does look like we will miss the record low of 15° in 1982.
The wind continues to exert its force. In the cemetery across the street I saw several large limbs blown off trees. On the lake a gale warming is in affect until this afternoon.
Not just terrestrial weather also Space weather makes the news with it's affects on GPS which even includes affects on the banking system while Florida is running out of sand and gaining knowledge on climate change.

Here we've got wind roaring thru the trees, windows rattling and a dusting of snow on our wooden deck. That translates into number of 30 degrees with a 35 WNW wind with gusts to 40.
On the national map there's a tight looking low centered over Lake Huron. The barometer bottomed at 1003 MB and is now up to 1007.
We are also under a wind advisory. This aims to tell people that winds of 30 to 45 MPH are expected and that driving maybe difficult.
Going forward today 1-3 inches of snow is expected. It will be much worse to the north with a blizzard warning for Marquette.
While all this is going on I'll be looking for a copy of the new Time magazine and it's list of 51 things we can do.

Weekly Poem
No matter the mode not a straight line day rather crooked courses.
Maybe set off by Martha Stewart the nails, TV the chalk board?
Hiking h20 bottle looped on finger.
Powerful wind thru tree tops.
Mark Work Gospel.
On the verge of rather than being shorts season.
Spring sun has power to warm thru overcast.
Need to look beyond computer predictions and be guided by what I see out the window.

Rain is the story here, the main weather reality. Coming down so hard cars on the highway were down to 45 due to visibility. It's been raining since 0300 and the last 12 hours have seen nearly an inch drop down.
Due to rain and darkness combination this morning you could see the traffic lights better than usual.
For the now it looks like most of the rain has passed. Lake Michigan looks clear with the next batch of rain still in Illinois.
It'll be cooling and perhaps snowing but not as low as the 18 degrees at Burns Ore where the daily low is usually in the 30's and there hasn't been a murder since 2001!
Meanwhile carbon dioxide is now a pollutant thanks to John Paul Stevens and could help this case along.
Global warming and rising sea levels will affect coastal residents, and there could be global warming caused wars.
As with most bad things warming affects will roll down hill.
Why the beat of global warming? "Global warming is all you're going to hear about the rest of your lives." Will Steger.

Take a day like tommorow is forecast to be. People will look at the expected high of 32 degrees and say what global warming. True this would be around 17° below the normal high.
Doing some reading on global warming and climate change and I've already got something of a retort for this. With day to day weather there is a lot of signal to noise ie days of lower than normal temperatures.
Then there are things like permafrost soil at or below freezing for two or more years. If something like permafrost is warming as it is then this is strong and more linear evidence of climate change. Also as the permafrost heats up it releases stored green house type gasses. The permafrost is a steadier state and shows global warming more clearly than does our more variable weather.
Essentially if you decide to take steps to cut back carbon emissions you are battling things like warming perma frost.

Weather Journal 1 April
Despite high rain chances Muskegon has not even received .25 inches of rain this weekend. Instead we've had some big winds. At the pierheads winds have been up to 20 knots.
Forecasts are forward looking and I'm sure some analysis of accuracy is done, but you don't see it often.
Feel kind of let down by the forecasts, but maybe I have to look past my monitor and out the window!
