Weather Journal 31 March

Yesterday's forecast called for a 70% chance of rain. We've not seen any yet and the rain chance is down to 60%. Although currently there is no rain on the Michigan side of the lake this afternoon is supposed to get rainier.

Elsewhere Sydney turned it's lights out for Earth Hour, dry weather cancels fireworks & Oregon tackles global warming solutions with a global warming report due.

Finally if you are reading a weather report, say Canadian, and barometric pressure is expressed in KP's you can simply multiply by 10 to get millibars. This will give you hecto pascals which is equivalent to millibars which are not standard units but are accepted none the less.

As of this writing Toronto shows a pressure of 102.7 kPa which multiplied by 10 is 1027. OR you can simply move the decimal one number to the right!

Weather Journal 30 March

Currently overcast with a temp of 47. Earlier this morning we had a 'trace' of unexpected rain. Should be a quiet day as a bridge to a rainy weekend with the mention of unspecified severe weather in the outlook. For Saturday and Sunday the rain chance is consistently set at 70 percent or more. Also expected are 10-20 MPH SE winds so add windy to rainy.

Regardless of weekend conditions Muskegon will have had a warm and rainy March for 2007.

Will Steger polar explorer uttered this stark quote, "Global warming is all you're going to hear about the rest of your lives." Currently he is on an expedition in Greenland and school kids there no about global warming.

Michigan Cactus?

2nd hike of the year. Spotted these which I think are cactus. Didn't know cactus grew in Michigan as I associate them with the desert.

Quite This Blue

Haven't seen the sky quite this blue in some time.

Weather Journal 29 March

Today may look like rain due to overcast skies but rain is not in the plan. A stout 10 to 20 mph SE wind is though. As of 1000 Muskegon has east winds at 17.

Such winds I suppose could create a barber. This is when a storm causes wind driven precipitation to freeze onto the decks and rigging of boats. Definition found in a newspaper while on the road. Water temperatures are above freezing so this is still a possibility. If Stanley ID was near the water a barber would be likely given it's nation wide low of 10.

Weather Journal 28 March

It's all a bit different today. Today's weather is colder and will be rainier. Rather than 60's or 70's we are looking at 40's and 50's. Also, "Much colder with that stiff east wind." which is around 17 MPH.

Lake Michigan is filled with rain per radar but it does look like the rain is softening a bit as it traverses the lake.

Still have that high high to the north. For instance Moosonee Canada has a baro reading of 1044.

I often write about climate-the average weather over time. A recent article says climates may appear and disappear. Polar climates may go away while tropical areas could sprout new climate types. Curiouser and curoiser.

1310 update. So much for rain, as forecast says, "Updated to remove mention of tstorms still expect light rain showers to linger." Radar-wise the reain has gone south and east.

My Afternoon

I erred by heeding the forecast. 60% chance of rain by 1 PM. Then explain the sun please.

Dressed according to forecast in pants and shirt regret tinged my 1st steps.

The lake was unexpectedly foggy. True inland the overcast was adding to the cold.

The weather struggled with fog, sun, cold remaining from overcast and heat coming up from the sun.

The lake was foggy enough that visibility was less than a couple miles. Overhead overcast shined up via sun.

Arriving at the lake sleeves were rolled up. Dogs were in the water.

I was lake side bouldering seeing what I could.

To my right a rock built little bolt hole hide away. Could it be a duck hunter or a homeless resident?

The presence of rusted tin cans makes me think hunter. Whenever I find these things they have rusted cans!

There was even a small piece of finished lumber across some rocks to sit. Yet you face away from the water? Maybe a homeless person staying away from the wind.

Next up a glass milk bottle. Says Sanitary Dairy Muskegon MI. Don't know it's vintage but to take the pounding of waves it must be a bit of a veteran.

Turning for home the coolness of the water's edge goes fast replaced by the pulling heat now going on inland.

All in an hour weather, exercise, history.

Presidential Death

3 President's Adams, Jefferson and Monroe have died on July 4. Adams and Jefferson both in 1826, Monroe (known as 'The Last Cocked Hat') in 1831. These are respectively our 2nd, 3rd and 5th presidents.

Our 4th president James Madison ruined an even neater coincidence by dying on June 28 1836...less than a week before the 4th of July.

Weather Journal 27 March

Yesterday we hit 70 which is 24 degrees above normal and 44 more than 2006. Today's normal high temperature is 47 and we are expected to top out at 57°. Whatever we get will be better than the all time low of 2° in 1996!

Rain looks likely this afternoon. Current radar shows a precipitation formation out in Iowa.

The forecast discussion mentions a high pressure system that will be over James Bay at the Southern end of Hudson Bay. Of interest is that the pressure of this high will be 1045 MB much a pressure not often seen. Pressure in this area is 1028 and rising.

We'll definitely be into a warmer weather pattern this week with a nary a below freezing temperature expected. The weather map looks active with a cold front from the Dakotas bringing rain on Tuesday.

Yesterday's high was 76° which tied the record set in 1945. Today's record is 77 degrees, but the temperature is called to peak at 66 degrees.

Weather Journal 22 March

The last day has been about warm temperatures, lightning and precipiation.

Yesterday at 0700 the temperature was 33°. Then a warm front passed and every hour until 1800 the temperature increased peaking at 61 degrees. From noon to 1300 the temperature gained 5 degrees! Also during this period the barometer declined 10 MB.

Rain was also a near constant with as much .35 inches falling in an hour. For the day the total was .97 inches, meaning March is already over an inch more rainy than normal.

Especially after dark there was considerable lightning. Lightning is definitely scary and can be deadly with around 70 per year in the US killed by it. As for safety count the time from lightning to thunder. If under 30 seconds then take shelter.

It was the first summer type nite. Things were moving fast with sun here and storms there. Sudden rain squalls yet warm temps. The wind was if not exactly warm then at least neutral as far as temperature.

Rain will continue until this afternoon with a tail of thunderstorms stretching back across Lake Michigan to Chicago.

Weather Journal 21 March

90% chance of rain today. Hear rain outside. OK, check mark on that forecast. Radar is heavy with precip even including some red areas which equal heavy precip. Post rain a warm front will give us temps in the 50's.

The steay rain makes you want to check out of the weather here. For instance, yesterday's low in the lower 48 was -21 at Embarrass Minn. which bills itself as 'The Cold Spot'.

Or, going to sea at 60 degrees south latitude 120 degrees east longitude- awfully near Antarctica- there will be winds of Force 8/Fresh Gale on the Beaufort scale. If you use Google Earth you fly in on water.

Back in March of 1773 Captain Cook sailed this area commenting, "Fresh gales in the pm, showers of snow and hail, the remainder mostly fair but very dark and gloomy." This point is nearest Antarctica's Wilkes Land named for another later explorer.

That's the weather in multiple aspects and dimensions it's always been around and always will be.

Clear and crisp temp below freezing but blue sky to take the edge off. Should stay this way with a high steadying things and north winds holding back the temp.

Going forward the outlook for April to June shows equal chances for above, below or at the norm temperatures. Watch this space for developments!

Sunday Michigan-specifically Grand Marais- had the national low temp of -18 Fahrenheit. That's 23 degrees colder than any where's near Grand Marais, Marquette next coldest at 5 above.

From the mouth of the Chief Justice

Justice Roberts “I thought we wanted our schools to teach something, including something besides just basic elements, including character formation and not to use drugs.”

Or perhaps our schools should focus on critical thinking and give kids the ability to decide whether or not to use drugs? Could the box stretch that far? Not bloody likely!

Teachers

Cal Thomas has some intriguing education related points.

  • " Spellings cited one major reason for underperformance I had not considered. When I was in school, she noted, I was taught mostly by bright and accomplished women."
  • "As opportunities for women in other professions opened up, many of the best and brightest teachers — and potential teachers — left or chose other professions because they paid more. "The teachers' unions," she said, "always negotiate the same pay raises for everybody and the superstars say 'forget this, I'm going where I will be recognized as a superstar."
One a historical point another perhaps an ideological one. Still I find heft in both of them.

Does this make a persuasive case to stop salties? Anti globalization yet pro environment?

This morning it's back to frost. Perhaps symbolic of this is the -2° Celsius temperature. Weather is controlled by a high to the west. Tonite snow will develop to early Monday morning. This will be the 1st snow in 11 days. Won't hold up, 50's later in the week.

Decided yesterday was the time to take my 1st hike of '07. The warmer temperatures and the gone from snow to grass status of my back yard had me convined that condition would be good.

Shouldn't have extrapolated my city conditions to conditions in the woods! Never the less a good hike, but sure go the WX wrong!

For the weekend forecasters say this, "Not much weather to speak of." By Monday maybe some rain. Still the mention of precipitation never gets to even 50% so the thinking is dry.

For the now we'll continue to scoot along with temps above freezing which I am guessing will not melt snow in the woods!

1st Hike of the Year

Still snow yet sunny.

Interesting tree- sans bark. What is it that de-barks the whole tree?

Weather Journal 16 March

Muskegon current weather is 26 degrees, barometer 1027 MB/steady, wind ENE @ 12. This pretty indicative of a weekend of steady weather. As a reminder Weather is the hour-to-hour and day-to-day state of the atmosphere: whether, at a particular time, it is rainy or sunny, warm or cold, windy or calm.

Today I'm more interested in climate
the average weather over time: a locale's typical weather patterns, including frequency and intensity of storms, cold outbreaks, and heat waves. Globally this winter (defined as DEC-JA-FEB) was the warmest on record globally 1.3 degrees above norm. Michigan hooked into this trend with this winter being the 90th warmest of the 112 recorded.

Muskegon was 7.4 degrees above norm in December, 5.5 above in January but 4.9 below in February for an average of 2.6 degrees above normal for the 3 months of winter. The cold February was seen nationwide with it average 1.8 below normal.

Going forward the 30 day outlook is for more normal weather- climate wise.

The many shades of mud....no actually with a temperature of 30 the mud is a bit solidified not as soupy as during previous days.

The weather map is more active but it won't mean much action around here. Snow chance is down to 20% and the regional radar is damn near 100% clear as far as Minneapolas. To the SE places like Columbus OH are receiving rain.

The recent warm weather has put paid to the Frozen Superior trip. However, Ed Shively has this to say: "But I did cross the ice all the way to Pictured Rocks. It's not the ending I wanted. But then, I'm the only person I know who ever tried. What an amazing trip."

Weather Journal 14 March

The recent warming has brought an ugliness to things. We've gone from glistening new snow to grainy melting snow to yellow grass and all the shades of mud. In one week we've gone from 12 inches of snow on the ground to 3.

The warming will slow down a bit as this is the last day over 40 for the week. The oncoming cold front will bring a little thunder but precipitation guesses are below 50%. As of 1120 the precip odds are at 50% but the radar is clear.

Essentially some cooler temperatures but little else upcoming in the weather.

Stretch of warm weather continues. Currently 52° which is 11 over the normal high. 60's and 70's are expected but near the lake we won't quite get this.

Starting tomorrow the niceness gets replaced by rain and snow changes although they are not over 50%.

With the Sun back we again can pay attention to the UV index which is 3 on a scale of 11. It says you should cover up, but I think we all get a mulligan for today after winter!

Today's weather is seeing a decline in pressure from 1025 at midnight down to 1018. This morning also saw 4 hours of light rain. A low is shown over Lake Superior with Marquette having a pressure of 1013.

Not to worry about this high. Here's one of it's effects: "With temperatures rising well into the 50s (high of 50 today, 55 on Tuesday) will burn off several more inches of remaining snow pack."

This quote from a NWS meteorologist: "You're starting to lose some of your snow cover (in Muskegon), but you've got 14 inches on the ground. It's not going to go away fast." For now true enough the back yard still has snow.

Have we had a real winter? According to WOODTV since mid January we've had 57.4 inches of snow, since 1 February it's been 5.6 degrees colder than normal, and we've had at least 4 inches of snow on the ground since January 15th. So, for around two months yes we've lived winter.

Fog is a sign of weather change saw some last nite and it occurred again this morning. Besides this it should be a quiet warm weather weekend with essentially a blank weather map to the west.

Weather Journal 9 March

Climate is essentially a historical concept. It's what we expect based on past weather for a given day. For 9 March Muskegon has these expectations: low of 23, high of 40. We're supposed to get up to 38, while last nite there was a low of 21 degrees so the weather which can be thought of as what we actually get is abnormal for this period.

A cold front to the west will come thru tonite bringing some rain. But it's pretty much a misnomer as the low is project at just 33 degrees.

To the north Edward Shively is off on a weather dependant project. It is the 'first frozen crossing of Lake Superior'.

He's been out a month walking east to west for the purpose of promoting his educational software. Currently he's approaching Marquette. This U.P. city will also have 40 degree temperatures upcoming which can't be good for ice.

Michigan is in a budget crisis, a turning point etc. Governor Granholm has proposed the dread tax increase. Per usual the GOP opposes this.

In general I favor some tax increases. Keeping things fact based look at the graph below. State revenue is not keeping up. No business or person could keep things going on a basis such as below. I think the facts show that just to keep things as is we need to raise revenue and tax increases are a fact based necessity regardless of your ideology.

What we have here is a warming trend. Yesterday's high was 27, today's is predicted to be 30 and then up to 42 and 45.

The map is clear with a high encircling us and a steady barometer.

This all adds up to quiet weather with temperatures warmer than they have been but actually just near normal for this time of year.

We ended up with 2.2 inches of snow falling. That was right around the norm. However, White Cloud got 6 inches and Harrison in Clare county got 7. Both of these are to the NE.

Today should be a pretty benign day with little or no snow and temperatures getting up near 30 as opposed to yesterday's 17 degree high.
